I am thinking I want to create a new series on this blog specifically for stories. I am trying to find a good name for it, but for now, I will call it "Story Time" until I can think of a better name. Let me know if you know a better name. I want to write a story every Wednesday or every other Wednesday.
Anyway, if you know me, I always tell stories. I always love to share my experiences and stories about me and my life. James, my fiance, is the exact way. Listening to us talk is actually amusing. We just go back and forth about each other's stories. "That reminds me of this one time...." and "OH do you remember that one time..." you get the idea. We talk too much. I do want to improve my storytelling because I am more of a rambler (if you couldn't tell by now) and tend to lose my train of thought quite often, so I will do my best to stick to the story line. Oh and WARNING- This is going to be a long post. So grab a snack.
I wanted to sit down and really tell the story of our surprise Disneyland proposal. If you didn't already know, Disneyland is one of my faaaaaavorite places! James filmed the whole day, you can watch it here but with so many emotions and excitement that day, I thought it would be fun to reflect on everything. Plus, it just makes me happy talking about it. And that is all that matters, right? :)
So it was the night before the big surprise, and I distinctively remember James trying to get me to go to sleep- which he never really does. He normally loves when I stay up late with him. But I thought nothing of it. But I was sitting on the couch editing a wedding video from Dana Point the week before. And He kept telling me "Baby, you need to go to sleep, you are gonna be so tired tomorrow". And I remember telling him "I need to finish this video so I don't have to go to work on my birthday for the rest of my life". I was tried and grumpy and upset that I had to work the next day on my birthday LOL. Also grumpy because James got the day off and I didn't. But I finally ended up going to sleep.
So around 3 or 4 AM something in the morning, I remember feeling James get out of bed. I was thinking it was closer to 5-6AM and I had thought James woke up early to make me breakfast or something. So he wakes me up and I quickly see he is not holding any breakfast so I hide under the blankets to go back to sleep. He then say "You have 1 hour and 45 minutes to pack a bag, we are going on a trip". And immediately, I respond , "No we are not, I have work?" and we argued this for about 5 minutes. I was so confused because no one at work had told me I had the day off... I work with one of my relatives so James arranged for me to have the rest of the week off without me knowing. So sweet. So after he finally assured me I had the day off, my mind was on vacation mode. He never told me where we were going, just that I needed to shower, dress comfy, and pack.
After packing almost everything, keep in mind, my house was in shambles because I was scrambling to get everything together, James tells me I need to repack all of my makeup and hair products into plastic bags. Sooooo we were flying to this surprise destination.
Fast forward about 20 minutes later, my sisters came through the door. My sisters are truly my best friends, so I was SOOOO EXCITED when I found out they were coming with us, where ever we were going.
After I was all packed, James' Mom picked us up to take us to the airport. James tried keeping the destination from me for a while, even after getting the tickets, but after going through security and heading towards the terminal I found out we were flying to Orange County, CA. Just because I am the biggest Disney fan, I automatically assumed we were going to Disneyland, even though he never confirmed it. So we were off on our flight to California. The flight was only about an hour, so the time flew by. Pun entirely intended.
We ended up getting the COOLEST Uber driver to take us to the hotel. I am not kidding, he was the COOLEST. His name was Vincent, I believe he said he was from Vietnam? I could be wrong, but the song Dream On from Aerosmith came on the radio and he blasted this song and sang at the top of his lungs. It was the best. He asked if we were going to Disneyland- since our hotel was located in Anaheim, and finalllly James admitted we were going to Disneyland. He then asked when we were leaving and what time. After we told him we were leaving Sunday, he told us he would pick us up and take us to the airport. :) SO NICE
After we checked into our hotel, we dropped of our luggage and James had brought my Minnie Ears with us. :D I was so happy
Once we finally got in the park, everything was perfect. It was a Thursday, December 1st- probably about 10 or 11 in the morning. The park was empty. We were able to get on all the rides in Disneyland within a few hours, I love when the park is like this. We took a lot of pictures, watched a little bit of a parade, ate, and ate some more. If you haven't been to Disneyland at Christmas time, I HIGHLY recommend. It is soooo pretty. All of the decorations, the trees, and even the characters dress up Christmas-y.
Once it was around like 2-3ish, I remember telling James and my sisters that I want to go back to the hotel to change my shoes. My feet were hurting so bad. And then my sister Brianna, who eats like no one I know, wants to grab some food before we head back to the hotel. She orders the biggest corn dog and fries, and we wait, and wait, and wait for her to finishing eating. (I found out later they were stalling)
The last thing I wanted to grab before leaving the park was a Birthday Pin. You can get these from the Guest Services at the front of Disneyland. While we were headed there, a person I have never seen before handed me a sucker and said "Happy birthday Ashley" and walked away. The sucker had a little note on it of a memory that only James would know. And I have my sisters asking me "Who was that?" and I am like "I don't know..." and then a little later as I am walking past a group of people someone asks "Ashley?" So I turn around and another sucker is handed to me by a different random stranger. This happened about 4 times. I was really trying to figure out how James has planned this out. I was with him the entire day and we never went to buy lollipops or anything. I noticed James was on his phone A LOT and this was around the time our friend, Zack, picked up the dogs from our house to take them to the babysitters. Automatically, since he was on his phone a lot, I am paranoid thinking one of the dogs got loose and he doesn't want to tell me because he thinks he is going to ruin my birthday. I was panicking on the inside.
So once we finally start heading out of the park, we walk toward Downtown Disney. I noticed that this is not the right way to the hotel, but my sister says she wants to stop by Sephora in Downtown Disney. As we are walking, I had a group of people in front of me and all I could hear was "awww that is nice". I move around them to see what they are talking about and I see like 100 people hovering around signs that say "Happy Birthday Ashley". The signs were being held by my family and friends. Everyone started singing Happy Birthday as I walked up. James handed me the last lollipop with a note and when I turned around the signs flipped and said "Will you marry me". And he got down on one knee. I of course started crying. I want to cry even writing this. It was so magical. I am so happy my family was able to be there.
Looking back, I have noooo idea how James was able to pull this all off. I found out later that James had been planning this trip for about 8 months. How did he hide that from me for 8 months?! I am oblivious. Also, my best friend, Jenna, was the one in the park following me around with the lollipops asking strangers to hand them to me. How did I not notice my best friend in the park following me all day? LOL!
So my family and friends all got to hangout in Disneyland together in celebration of the engagement and my birthday. One of my favorite parts of the entire trip, aside from the engagement, was all of us got to ride Hollywood's Tower of Terror one last time before they changed the ride to Guardians of the Galaxy. Tower of Terror was my favorite ride so it was so fun to ride it one last time with everyone. I am so mad at myself for not purchasing the picture they take on the ride. I never even thought about it until months later that I should have bought it. I had so much fun riding all the rides with my family and friends.
This was the best weekend of my life. I wish I could go back to this day and re-live it. I definitely would not have worn green socks, LOL! But I am so glad we have a video to reflect on forever. :)
I hope you like this post!
